Project description:
London Transport Museum, based in Covent garden, has a large collection which includes classic vehicles, posters, signs, uniforms, photos, maps and drawings. The museum website is largely delivered on the massive Transport for London (TfL) content management system. London Transport Museum wanted to create a sub-site for their Learning content, aimed at families, children and schools, and asked altcom to provide an Open Source content management solution that would integrate with the rest of the website.
However, creating the Learning subsite within the TfL content management system was problematic as much of this new content was Web 2.0, requiring more direct control of content and functionality.
The catch was that the sub-site and its CMS would need to integrate with the TfL CMS, which runs on a different platform and different server. The Museum asked altcom to provide an Open Source content management solution that would work with the TfL CMS and give them the flexibility they needed.
- The chosen CMS was Joomla! - flexible, Open Source and user friendly
- The information architecture was developed by LTM staff and altcom
- The visual design was by altcom taking into account the existing website style and branding
- The system was built to handle video and podcasting and is highly extensible with literally hundreds of 3rd party modules available
- Search integration with TfL is achieved using dynamic XML sitemap generation
- altcom assisted with server configuration and optimisation
altcom were great to work with, providing us with an impressive technical and design solution to our problem and endless patience with non-Joomla!-savvy staff building content at our end.
