Project description:

University College Falmouth Facebook Application

In 2011 altcom helped develop a social media strategy for the University. UCF already had numerous Facebook pages and a presence on YouTube and other platforms, but there was no single place where UCFs social media presence could be accessed from a single point and nowhere representing the University as a whole. Since UCF had been using Facebook and social media for sometime across its schools and departments, a central "portal" Facebook page pointing to the key UCF groups, pages, events, news feeds and video streams would make it easier for people to access UCF's social media presence across platforms.

The work altcom carried out included:

  • Designing and building a Facebook app that is entirely managed and hosted within the content management system that handles UCF's main website
  • Integration of third party apps to handle aggregation of video and news feeds, including Twitter
  • Training of staff to use the app (not much needed as it is managed from within the CMS)

Background

The application provides a course finder, direct feeds of news and events and other info about UCF plus pointers to other pages on FB.  Third party apps were integrated to pull content from YouTube and Twitter. A key feature was that the App itself is entirely hosted and maintained within a standard open source CMS system which means it is easy for staff to keep up to date.  as far as they are concerned it is just another page of the website - just one that is hosted on Facebook.

They coached and advised us to the point at which they provided training for the Content Management System and like good parents they continue to be in the background ready to give support when required. I'm really excited... read more
