Web site design using supplied brand guidelines plus bespoke software in Ajax and PHP integrated with the content management system. The web site was built using an open source CMS package (Joomla!). It includes integration of the SIMILE Timeline and an email Newsletter management system.

Project description:

In Autumn 2007 altcom was one of several South West companies to tender for the web design and build of a content management system web site for the Somerset based Project Taunton initiative. Project Taunton is the development team overseeing the extensive regeneration of Taunton, Somerset. Over the next decade this regional Market Town, located on the River Tone, is set to become a centre for sustainable and prosperous living in South West England. The content management system website has been implemented in Phases and is now the primary information point about the regeneration of the town for developers, the community and other interested parties. As it grows it will provide a mechanism for greater community engagement.

altcom was responsible for web design, coding, commissioning and hosting of the web The content management system selected was Joomla!, an open source CMS. Substantial code extensions and quality control modifications were carried out to meet the functional and accessibility requirements of the project.

The nature of the project involved a number of stakeholders so the development process needed to expose early prototypes for early feedback. altcom applied a Rapid Prototyping solution to the development which ensured that an operational, password protected version of the content management system was available early on so that Work In Progress could be monitored and feedback provided by the Project Taunton team. This also provided the Project Taunton web team with access to the back-end administration area so they could become familiar with the operation of the system prior to CMS training sessions run by altcom.
