The CACHE Project was a comparative study of the effects of 2 different medicines in the treatment of Chronic Heart Failure. As part of the project a central Database was established containing patient details with a Data Entry system to allow staff to create and update records. The system was built using Oopen Source Django, Python and Postgres. The Oracle licence fee for the system would have been more than the complete development cost.
Given that highly personal patient data was being stored in the database, security safeguards were a major consideration alongside ensuring the integrity and security of the database.
The system also had to handle scanning of documents with meta data plus automatic mailing list generation and the management of call-centre type operations. Automated and manual reporting to provide information to assist in the running of the project was also a key deliverable.
